ABSTRACT

According to the WHO, thrombotic ischemic stroke is the second cause of death in countries with average incomes representing 12,8% of mortality from all over the causes. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with thrombotic ischemic stroke at the Neurology Service of Hospital Edgardo Rebagliati Martins during the year 2016. Methods: An observational, analytic, retrospective, case-control study was performed. The study population consisted of patients hospitalized in the HNERM Neurology Service during 2016. A sample of 76 cases and 76 controls was obtained with a confidence level of 0,95, a statistical power of 0,8, with number of controls per case of 1. Results: The average age of the 76 cases was 72.21 (SD of 14,5), 39 (51,3%) were male and 37 (48,7%) were female. In the bivariate analysis, elderliness had OR 4,8; male OR 1,6; hypertension OR 9,205; dyslipidemia OR 5,771; smoking OR 4,072; diabetes, OR 3,78 and high BMI OR 3,124. All of them presented a statistically significant association, except from male p= 0,143. In the multivariate, elderliness decreased its OR to 2,6 p = 0,083 as male OR 0,5 p=0,359. Other variables such as hypertension OR = 9,9; diabetes OR 9,7; dyslipidemia OR 11,9; smoking OR 8,1 and high BMI OR 4,4 increased their OR and presented a statistically significant association. Conclusions: Hypertension and dyslipidemia are the main risk factors associated with thrombotic ischemic stroke, so it is important to make a better control and follow-up of them.
